With a Master’s Degree in Civil and Structural Engineering, James climbed the ladder & quickly progressed becoming a director by age 30. Since joining G&B in 2018, he’s been on a mission to grow the company, securing major contracts, earning ISO certifications, and overseeing projects from £2k to £3 million. Under his leadership, G&B continues to build on solid foundations—literally and figuratively.
Finance Director
Michael Cook, our Finance Director, is the man with the plan - literally. As an FCA (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants) with over 30 years of experience in the world of numbers, Michael is the strategic mastermind behind G&B's financial health. He oversees everything from day-to-day accounting to long-term financial planning, ensuring the company stays on a path of growth and success. Whether he's crafting financial forecasts or balancing the books, Michael’s expertise keeps us in the black and on track for the future.
Commercial Manager
Craig Johnson, our Commercial Manager, enhanced his skills in the fast-paced world of London’s construction scene, where he developed as a quantity surveyor before stepping up to director level. Equipped with a BSc in Quantity Surveying, Craig is responsible for the commercial leadership of the business. Since joining G&B, his knowledge and experience has driven rapid business growth and boosted turnover. With his direct approach, Craig ensures G&B is always ahead in the financial game.
Contracts Manager
Martin has been a cornerstone of G&B Civil Engineering for over a decade, bringing 30+ years of construction and civil engineering know-how to the team. Armed with an HND in Building Studies and an eye for detail, Martin is the master of precision, especially when it comes to rail projects. His mantra? Plan meticulously, execute flawlessly, and keep everyone safe. Whether it's delivering major projects for clients like NWL and Nexus or juggling complex contracts, Martin ensures everything runs like a well-oiled machine—on time, within budget, and with a happy client.
Contracts Manager
Greg Harrison, our Contracts Manager, brings a wealth of experience to the team, with a solid background in Quantity Surveying and a sharp attention to detail. Greg plays a pivotal role in overseeing the tendering process and ensuring that each project starts seamlessly. His expertise lies in managing contracts, identifying potential risks, and resolving issues before they arise. Whether it's tracking budgets, coordinating with stakeholders, or ensuring compliance, Greg’s leadership keeps our projects running smoothly, on time, and within budget.
Operations Manager
With over a decade of management experience and a background as a time-served groundworker, Kevin Christie has seen it all in Civil Engineering. As an SMSTS-certified and Temporary Works Supervisor, Kevin’s mission is to keep the project team firing on all cylinders. He expertly oversees day-to-day operations, planning resources, tracking progress, and ensuring that materials are procured on time. Whether he’s managing the chaos or keeping the project on track, Kevin’s cool head and sharp planning skills ensure nothing falls through the cracks!

Chris Heslop, a seasoned plant operator and drainage specialist turned site supervisor, is the glue that holds our project and commercial teams together. With SMSTS certification and an NVQ Level 3 in supervision, Chris expertly navigates the day-to-day operations of the project team, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Whether he's planning resources or tracking progress, he’s always got an eye on the bigger picture. Chris makes sure every task is on track and delivered to the highest standards.

For the past two years, Tony Maguire has been a vital part of G&B Civil Engineering, backed by 11 years of experience as a foreman. A concrete guru and groundworks specialist, Tony doesn’t just manage the team—he leads with a mix of technical expertise and a dash of humour. With an SMSTS qualification in hand and a knack for building strong relationships with site teams, clients, and stakeholders, Tony’s leadership ensures every project is executed smoothly and with top-notch results. When challenges arise, Tony’s problem-solving skills are as solid as the foundations he builds!
Trainee Construction Manager
Lewis Axon may be a trainee construction manager at G&B Civil Engineering, but he’s already got 16 years of global construction experience under his belt—including a stint down under in New Zealand. While juggling the demands of his degree in construction management, Lewis has mastered the art of health, safety, and environmental practices. Known for his sharp communication and organisational skills, he plays a pivotal role in planning, scheduling, and cost management. Whether it's ensuring smooth site operations or upholding safety standards, Lewis is the steady hand that keeps projects on track—efficiently, safely, and with a smile!
Apprentice Quantity Surveyor
Before trading his hard hat for a calculator, Louis gained valuable hands-on experience as a labourer on construction sites. Now in his 4th and final year at Northumbria University, he's well on his way to earning his degree in Quantity Surveying and working towards CIOB chartership. Louis plays a key role in supporting the commercial manager and senior QS, contributing to cost estimation, tender preparation, and site visits. Eager to learn and developing rapidly, Louis has all the makings of a future star in the QS world!
Commercial Support
Lee Maughan is juggling both university life and the fast-paced world of construction. While studying for his degree at Northumbria, Lee works part-time at G&B, assisting the commercial team with tendering and take-offs. His sharp eye for detail and eagerness to learn make him a valuable support to the quantity surveyors, and he’s quickly proving that he can balance textbooks and drawings with ease.
HR Manager
Carol Marshall, the HR maestro at G&B Civils, has been expertly balancing the business of people for over 30 years. Equipped with a Business and HRM degree (Hons) from 2006, Carol brings a treasure trove of experience in HR, training, and customer service. From smooth onboarding to keeping everyone happy and healthy, Carol runs the HR ship with precision. Her multitasking superpower and sharp communication skills keep senior management on track, while ensuring the company stays in tip-top shape for accreditations and compliance.
Accounts Manager
As the longest-serving member of the G&B team, Jackie Fisher is the backbone of our accounts department. Whether she’s overseeing accounts payable and receivable, processing payments, or making sure payroll is spot-on, Jackie handles it all with precision. Known for her tireless work ethic, Jackie keeps everything running smoothly—no transaction too big, no task too small. From balancing the books to handling all those “in-between” jobs, Jackie is the behind-the-scenes hero who ensures G&B’s financial health stays on point.
Accounts Support
As the newest recruit at G&B, Frank Cook hit the ground running in the accounts department. Specialising in invoicing and keeping financial records up to date, Frank ensures everything is uploaded smoothly onto the system. With a keen eye for detail, he’s also the first port of call for client enquiries. Whether it’s handling payments or troubleshooting accounts, Frank is already proving himself to be a vital cog in the G&B financial machine—making numbers look good and keeping things in check!
